Origin of Soil: The development of soil is initiated by the physical and chemical disintegration of rocks that is expos ca to the earth’s surface that is under the action of the atmospheric elements and the action of water percolating down the surface.
All soils contain mineral particles, organic matter, water and air. The combinations of these determine the soil’s properties – its texture, structure, porosity, chemistry and colour. Soil is made up of different-sized particles.
Soils with smaller particles (silt and clay) have a larger surface area than those with larger sand particles, and a large surface area allows a soil to hold more water. In other words, a soil with a high percentage of silt and clay particles, which describes fine soil, has a higher water-holding capacity.
